This is about my second visit to the rehearsal room to see a run through. Please read my other post on the first run and, if you can, view my Mahara View on it please
So a second time to see it, it’s the most valuable thing to anyone working on a show, you are definetly more alert, you know what’s round the next corner. The twists have been unfolded, the monologues seem to be longer this time, the comedy parts have dissapeared almost to non-exist. Yet still it’s a great feeling to know a show inside out, though I’m not talking only lines. Everything is almost falling into place for you, this truck comes on now, the tabs go out here, she makes her entrance USR. These are the vital things.
The second run for me was to continue how I answered the set of questions which John asked me. They really helped me to prepare for this time round. Although to watch it as an audience member may have been useful also this time, making notes on props and questions seemed more logic than just sitting watching.
I don’t know if anyone else gets this… But when I see an advert on TV which seems to go in forever, the second time it is always so short, same with films etc. (That last sentence has absolutely no relevance at all just wondered if anyone else gets that?).
Another point which I would like to bring up is about the style in which the director works. It fascinating for me, I’m sure I just haven’t seen it before and plenty others out there do it but I like Lu’s style. It’s very laid back, but at the same time she seems to be on top of everything, if that makes sense? I also like the way she involved everyone. We all gathered at the end of the run and she went through all the notes she had. I like this, after all why should cast and crew be treated different? I’m sure if this is right, but I think she likes to refer to the designing teams as “The Creators” I just think that’s general niceness.
So it feels great to have the team strengthened again outwith the stage management side if things. I feel part of the company now and much more involved in what is going on. In conclusion a nice day and we made some decent progress. I get a great feeling on what I am to expect over the next few weeks, and certainly what looks like potential to have some great laughs and a bit of fun. Is that not why we do things? For a bit of enjoyment.
Thanks for stopping by RSAMD.
Out.

Hey Craig. Great to read you blog. I agree that it is so valuable to see the rehearsals as an ASM, and I hope you might agree that it would even benifit LX and TSM crews to see a run first (if it was practical).
I found it makes propping much easier. We were often asked for “and old suitcase which is thinner than the one we have now, but not too thin, and should be able to hold and average sized object. It must fasten, but should open easily”. What sort of description is that? But when you see what it is used for in rehearsals, it makes it so much easier!
